Small Business, Big Community

The thing about owning a small business is that, it’s small. When someone asks, “Who’s the chef?” it’s you. When others ask, “Who writes your blog? Takes your pictures? Pays your bills?” … it’s still you.

But we are growing. We’ve been lucky to be able to bring on a web-team (shout out to Perez & Zed), and a graphic designer (Jaime) and guest photographers (Julie, Emily & Alex) at times. Seeing your ideas and visions come true with a talented team of friends is an awesome feeling. We feel like our family is growing.

Growing even more than we know. We told you about the Cheap Art Sale back in December. This was a community event to benefit Girls Rock DC put on by our friend Bekka. We spent most of a beautiful Saturday working a bake sale, meeting local artists, and raising money for a great cause. Best of all, we got to meet new people and they got to meet our treats.

By far the best was was getting to see people try our treats and watching them smile. Hearing the “Mmmm” after they bit into a John Hancock cookie was music to our ears. The idea of our hard work making even more people happy is awesome!

More people…. like the fine folks at the Maryland Food Collective. You see, our friends Jamie & Lucas stopped by our table that day and bought some cookies. They liked them so much that they told their friends at the University of Maryland Co-Op. This worker-owned business has a cool mission and sells local, healthy and affordable food.

Just last week the Co-Op placed an order for our Vegan Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies. We could tell that this was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. According to Kathryn, who is a part of the Co-Op, the cookies were a big hit. Big enough that they have doubled their order for this week and added some John Hancock cookies as well.

We’ve grown so much that we’ll be on a shelf near you before you know it. So if you find yourself out at the U.MD campus this week, be sure to stop in to see us on their shelves. Take a picture and we’ll put it on our Facebook page!
